What the World Needs: Authentic Allyship, Workshop Part 2
Join Chandra Montgomery and Shalonda Martin as they lead a 2-part series on how to be an authentic ally. To fully understand allyship, one must learn and understand the history of disadvantages in the United States, systemic advantages of certain groups and barriers some may face on their journey to becoming an authentic ally.
In this session participants will learn:
- About the systemic issues that result in bias and inequity
- What privilege means
- How to make actionable changes towards being an authentic ally for diversity, equity, and inclusion
About Chandra Montgomery, Director, Health Sciences Prospect Development at University of Southern California:
Chandra Montgomery is a philanthropy expert, equity and inclusion evangelist, and political junkie. Over the past two decades, Chandra has built a career in philanthropy and fund development, helping to secure millions of dollars in philanthropic support for youth and family services, higher education, academic medicine and public media.
She is a director in the Advancement division of the University of Southern California. Chandra is also the founder of The Black Civics Project, a digital platform committed to expanding civic and political engagement within the Black community. Previously, she has worked at National Public Radio, Virginia Commonwealth University, The College of William & Mary and Sasha Bruce Youthwork, Inc. She is also currently pursuing a master’s degree at the Gould School of Law at USC. Forthcoming projects include DEI web events, a companion podcast for The Black Civics Project and two book manuscripts to celebrate diverse philanthropy and HBCUs (historically black colleges and universities).
Chandra is president of the Greater Los Angeles chapter of the National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc. (Hampton University) and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is also a member of the NAACP and serves on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee of APRA. In addition to her affiliation with The Riveter, she is a founding member of Blackbird House, a coworking collective for women of color and allies in Culver City, California.
When she’s not analyzing donor data, raising political consciousness or advocating for equity and inclusion – you can find her reading case law, nerding out listening to podcasts, or consuming copious amounts of HGTV. Chandra is a Virginia native and lives with her daughter in Los Angeles.
About Shalonda F. Martin, Senior Director, Data Integrity at University of Southern California:
Shalonda is a data, organizational development, and leadership professional with over 18 years of experience in advancement services and leadership. Additionally, she is passionate about diversity, equity and inclusion and creating work environments that embrace an anti-racist culture. In her career, she has held leadership roles at Pepperdine University, UCLA, and now USC. She specializes in developing data quality programs, leading professional and organizational development efforts, implementing data management strategies, identifying opportunities for system optimization, troubleshooting operational issues, and implementing best practices.
Shalonda has an MS in Management and Leadership from Pepperdine University and is currently a doctoral student at USC in the Organizational Change and Leadership program. She is currently focused on leadership and diversity within the nonprofit sector and hopes that her studies and research will help to further the nonprofit field. Additionally, she is working on her coaching certification through the International Coach Federation (ICF).
Shalonda serves as a member of the programming committee for the Association for Advancement Services Professionals (AASP). She also has served as a coach for graduate students as they navigate their capstone projects. Additionally, she leads webinars and speaks at conferences sharing her knowledge of Advancement, leadership/organizational development, and DEI. She enjoys seeing others thrive and finding ways to best serve them.
